“Power of the Resurrection“
1 Corinthians 15:1-11
March 7, 2010
1. The Corinthians’ faithfulness speaks to the power of the gospel (vv. 1-2)- The gospel was preached and received by the Corinthians (“received”-to take to one’s self; become a companion to)
- The gospel caused the Corinthian believers “… to stand…hold fast” in the confidence of what they believed to be true.
2. The message of the gospel , which was Paul’s priority (vv. 3-4)
- Christ died for our sins (Romans 5:8-11)
- Christ was buried
- Christ was raised on the third day (Romans 6:5-11,20-23)
- Romans 1:16 states that the gospel is the power of God for salvation to all who believe. It is the resurrection of Jesus that validated God’s victory over both sin’s penalty and power.
3. The witnesses of the resurrection (vv.3-7)
- Scripture itself bears witness of the resurrection (Psalm 16:9-11; Acts 26:22-23)
- “Christ appeared to Cephas (Peter) and the Twelve” (Acts 1:22)
- “Christ appeared to more than 500 brothers”
- “Christ appeared to James”
4. Testimony of Paul’s changed life (vv. 8-10)
- Christ appeared to Paul while he was persecuting the church. (Acts 9:1-19)
- God’s gift of salvation turned Paul 180 degrees to becoming one of the most diligent witnesses of Jesus death, burial and resurrection.
5. Bearing witness to this truth
- Do our lives reflect a firmly established faith?
- Is the power of the gospel (God’s victory over sin’s penalty and power) clearly evident in my responses?
