Why this study of God?
I am convinced that what we as God’s people need is a bigger, more accurate view of GOD HIMSELF, a view that will compel us to an attitude of awe-inspired reverence and worship. In the presence of the King Eternal we find our PURPOSE, to find our satisfaction in Him. We discover our HOPE, both for now and for eternity, the hope that He will be faithful to all of His promises. And in Him we bask in the truest JOY, a joy that circumstances and people cannot take away, for it is rooted in our UNSHAKEABLE, UNCHANGING LORD.
Jehovah Sabboth- The LORD of Hosts
- In Scripture, the word “host” refers to a large number of something. When the word “host” is used in Scripture to describe a human army, the emphasis is on the strength represented in the number of soldiers. When this name is used of God, the emphasis is on the strength of the mighty, self-existing, unstoppable LORD.
- The most concentrated uses of this reference to the LORD are in the major and minor prophets. In these books, the LORD is speaking through His prophets to warn His people of discipline for their disobedience, and yet remind them that He will ultimately defend them from their enemies and restore them to Himself. The LORD is strong enough to accomplish all that He has promised.
- Isaiah 6:1-4- While this name is used in Scripture to identify the LORD as Israel’s defender and protector, this passage describes Him in His splendor. It is important for us to remember that while the LORD has sworn Himself to defend His people, His ultimate purpose is to defend His glory in holiness.
Jehovah Maccaddeshcem- The LORD your Sanctifier
- “Sanctify”- a term in Scripture that means set apart.
- This particular name is used in passages of Scripture like Exodus 31:13 and Leviticus 20:7-8, when He commands that the Sabbath and His people be set apart for His purposes.
- God’s holiness sets Him apart from anything that is sinful. Throughout Scripture, God commands that people, days, and objects be “set apart” and purified for His service, so that He may be glorified.
- Genesis 2:3- The first thing that the LORD set apart is the last day of His creation, which He later called the Sabbath.
- Numbers 7:1- The tabernacle utensils, furnishings, and alter are set apart for the service of the LORD.
- Throughout Scripture, God sets people apart for His service, calling them to reflect His glory and empowering them to live surrendered to His will.
Our response to the God of Hosts, the Sanctifier
- Just as God set apart the Israelites to be His special people, and defended and protected them, we who have called out to Jesus as Savior and Lord are the people of God. (I Peter 2:9)
- We are called to be holy, even as God is holy (I Peter 1:15). God provides the means to accomplish this seemingly impossible command.
- Salvation from sin’s penalty through His Son.
- Power to overcome sin’s power through the continuous work of the Spirit
- Promise of ultimate perfection when we are finally and forever changed in His presence.
